Tips for Cutting Grapefruit and Oranges

Oranges are an easy snacktime staple—just toss one in a bag and go—but it’s not always easy to get past the peel to the juicy goodness inside. A few cutting techniques can make snacking on citrus less of a messy chore and more of a delicious treat.

NC State Extension Nutrition Specialist Carolyn Dunn shows us two techniques for cutting grapefruit and oranges in this segment of In the Kitchen. All you need is a chef’s knife, a paring knife, a cutting board and a few new knife skills.

In the first technique, we use a chef’s knife to remove the peel and chop the fruit into bite-sized chunks. To get whole segments from a grapefruit, just remove the peel with a chef’s knife and then slice each segment using a paring knife.

This segment of Homegrown In the Kitchen was filmed in the Dinah E. Gore Teaching and Research Kitchens at NC State University. The state-of-the-art kitchen complex was designed to enhance and extend our work in teaching, research and Extension.
