Understanding Grain Bin Dangers

Of the 47,000 farms in North Carolina, many have one or more grain storage bins on site. You’ll often find grain bins in rural areas where phone signals may be spotty or non-existent. Because of this, contacting emergency personnel may be difficult.

In only 20 seconds, an adult can become trapped by grain in a storage bin. Even the most physically fit person cannot overcome the weight and force of the grain. Grain bins can be especially dangerous for children. Follow a few tips to keep everyone safe.

Grain Bin Safety Tips

  • Keep a body harness and lifeline or boatswain’s chair on hand
  • Have adequate lighting
  • Check the bin’s atmosphere for oxygen content, combustible gases, or toxic agents
  • Make sure everyone who would enter the bin knows the proper safety procedures
  • Have at least two standby personnel ready to assist in case of an emergency
