There are many definitions of local food, depending on where you live and your personal preferences. At NC State Extension, we generally agree that anything grown or produced in North Carolina is considered local for the state. We all benefit from our state’s diverse climate and geography, which produces many different commodities over a large part of the growing season.

Take shiitake mushrooms, for example. Brenda Sutton of Fogwood Farm, in Reidsville, N.C., grows these dark-loving delicacies 12 months of the year, along with blueberries and other fruits used to make jams and jellies, which they supply to local restaurants and stores.
